I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to those of you who I have not had a chance to meet, or who I have only met me in passing.

I usually say that I began working at Hoogendyk & Associates in the summer of 2011 as a registered tax return preparer, but truly, my first position with the company started in 1992. My official job, Executive Paper Shredder, came with a host of responsibilities and a very reasonable $5 per 33 gallon trash bag of shredded paper paycheck. At seven, I was on top of the world, but I decided to leave my burgeoning career in accounting to explore my other passions.

After 17 years in academia, I very proudly walked away with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences from Colorado State University (Go Rams!). I decided to move down to the state of Goiàs in Brazil for a number of months to get my hands dirty volunteering at the Hospital Evangèlico Dr. Gordon. After an amazing experience and developing a love for the beautiful country of Brazil, I found myself at a professional crossroad. For a host of reasons, I couldn’t see myself in the medical field for the rest of my professional life, so I moved home and began weighing my options.

When I landed back stateside, I took the time I had to reassess my career goals and take on some volunteering opportunities here in the community. Eager to work as well, I immediately took a job in a sales position (something I was reluctant to do because I am a firm believer of the idea that you don’t need to sell someone something unless it’s something they really need, a philosophy which doesn’t always go over well in the sales industry). After a couple of months, I began looking for additional work with the intent of refilling my travel coffer. Naturally, because of my having worked around Tom’s accounting firms in various capacities, and with my analytical background in the sciences, I began helping process the extended tax returns at Hoogendyk & Associates.

Within two months, I left sales and began working full time at our accounting firm in order to give the practice the time and focus that it warranted. In the interest of better serving our clients, I began studying for my Enrolled Agent Certification, which I am proud to say I obtained in November of 2013 after passing all three exams my first go-round. With the E.A. status, I am able represent clients before the IRS in the same way that a C.P.A does.

Moving forward, I can’t wait to continue to grow my knowledge base in accounting and work with Tom to expand the services that we are able to provide all of you in order to make your tax and financial needs as painless and streamlined as possible. Thanks for taking the time go dig in and get through this. I appreciate your willingness to learn a little bit about me, and I look forward to getting to work with all of you for many years to come.

Much thanks,
